Oura Cardio Effort: The Science Behind the Feature

Oura Cardio Effort: The Science Behind the Feature

Description

  • The Oura Cardio Effort feature is a personalized estimate of how much a workout taxes a member's cardiovascular system. It is scored for each workout and summed across the week.
  • At its core, Cardio Effort is a heart-rate intensity and duration metric. It lets Oura members understand the impact of their movement independent of absolute metrics such as steps, calories, or movement minutes.
  • Cardio Effort draws on cardiovascular training-load principles such as Training Impulse (TRIMP.) Heart rate is treated as an internal-load signal and interpreted relative to the member's own resting heart rate and recent activity baselines.
  • The same activity can yield different Cardio Effort values for different people, and the same activity may produce less Cardio Effort as fitness improves. It describes personal patterns and supports a sustainable interpretation of weekly fitness trends. It is not a universal target and does not diagnose disease.
  • Because it is a personalized cardiovascular strain metric, Cardio Effort can reveal meaningful trends in relation to VO₂max, Cardiovascular Age, women's health, aging, and more.

Expert perspective

“Two people can run the same 5K and have completely different experiences in their bodies. Cardio Effort is built around that idea,” shared Sabrina Lynch, PhD, Senior Algorithm Scientist at Oura, “Instead of measuring what you did, it reflects how hard your cardiovascular system worked relative to your own baseline, so you can see how your activity adds up over time.”
